RSS feeds and Search Tools

Although I didn’t create an account, I did explore some of the search tools and located several feeds. I visited some of my favorite websites to see if I could find the newsfeed and videofeed icons.

The first website was hamptonroads.com, which I was disappointed in. The RSS newsfeed icon was not on the homepage. Instead, I drilled down from the email/wireless alerts link to video feeds, and then at the bottom of the page found RSS feeds. The search was very clumsy so I had to fumble my way through it.

The second website was philly.com which was very user friendly. On the homepage there was an RSS index button which took me to “Favorite RSS feeds” (my yahoo); “All RSS feeds” (on Philly.com); “Philly Talks” (all writers and experts); and “Q&A”.

The third website was ABCNews.com which is also very user friendly. At the top of the homepage is a “Top Headlines” RSS button and a “Watch Video” RSS button. When you go to the top headlines there are numerous feed icons such as Yahoo, Newsgator, Netvibes, Google, etc.

Advantages of using an RSS reader

An RSS reader allows you to keep up with current events and updates on the web without having to review old information. Once you've sent it up, the information comes into one place so you can read it when it's convenient for you. You can customize it to topics you're interested in and best of all it filters out all the spam.

The Use of Blogging by Libraries

I believe the use of blogging by libraries is a wonderful tool for exchanging information with a target audience, particularly our new techno generation. Traditionally, libraries had the reputation of being boring and stuffy. But, blogging enables librarians of all different ages to exchange ideas, review books, or call attention to their age group’s interests.

Blogging also enables a library to market itself affordably. Program listings can always be current, relaying changes quickly. Gifts and sponsorships can be acknowledged which can get other community organizations involved. Also, new residents to the community can see what is happening in their neighborhood.

What does 2.0 mean to me?

2.0 is a web based communications tool allowing customers to interact with the library without going to the actual brick-and-mortal building. It is also an excellent tool for those customers confined to their homes or facilities. Handicapped patrons are able to communication with others, giving them a new lease on life because they have access to the same network as all other users.

7-1/2 Habits of Lifelong Learners

Lifelong learning is something I hope to always aspire to. Each year I try to learn one new thing. At 40 I learned to swim, later I completed my Associate's Degree and two years later my Bachelor's. I've also learned about the Japanese culture, as my daughter is now stationed there. I also went back to work. Next year is just around the corner and I'll put myself out there once again.

My easiest habit is accepting responsibility for my own learning. The easiest way to put it is, "If I don't do it, no one will do it for me". It is very satisfying to know your achievements are yours. Be responsible to accept the help/mentoring of others as a hand up and not a crutch because everyone has something to offer you. Likewise, extend yourself to someone else.

My hardest habit is beginning with an end in mind. I have to admit I tend to procrastinate. I know what has to be done, so I give myself mini deadlines to move me along. Sometimes I get sidetracked, which isn't always bad because it can lead you in a direction you hadn't thought of. However if you don't focus, you won't achieve your goal.
